Month Long Volunteer Family

Sean and Kim McConaghay came to RMMC in September/October through the SOOP program (a program with Mennonite Mission Network) and spent about one month volunteering along with their sons, Jack and Elias. Sean was on sabbatical from his job as the Facilities Director at Camp Deerpark in Lowville, New York. Even though he was on sabbatical from camp work, Sean did not hesitate to jump in with his very handy set of camp maintenance skills. The entire family pitched in to help with washing dishes, cleaning cabins, and preparing meals. Sean and Kim are no strangers to RMMC, having been on summer staff in the early 2000’s. They wanted to share their love of RMMC with their boys, and made an effort to let them explore the beautiful area around camp – even hiking to Pikes Peak and back down again, an impressive feat for anyone, let alone two young boys! It was a real joy to have the McConaghay family here and we certainly appreciate their help and friendship they offered to all of us.

Long Term Volunteer Positions Added

It is a tremendous blessing to have long term volunteers here at RMMC. So the idea is to keep a good thing going! As a result, two “Long Term Volunteer” positions will become a part of normal camp staffing. Anyone considering a gap year, an internship opportunity, or a year of service at any life stage are invited to consider joining the ministry at camp. While RMMC will continue to rely on volunteers for a day, a weekend, a week, or more, this is an opportunity to encourage and match the desire of folks for a longer commitment. Long term volunteers become yet another friendly face in welcoming and serving campers and guests throughout the year. The Pleiades building project (staff apartment, etc.) makes this possible as year around living spaces for staff or long term volunteer positions have always been limited.  Pictured are long term volunteers Les Miller, Sam Hershberger, Betty Schrag and Jonathan Schrag.

Who’s Been Helping
Thank you to all the volunteers that have helped at camp in the month of November: Eli Longacher, Ray Martin, Dave Miller, Linda Miller, Ben Sampson, Jacob Sampson, Sara Sampson, Harlow Schmidt, Ed Shirk, Phyllis Shirk, Ethan Spicher, Austin Unruh

The Hesston College Volleyball team (pictured left) recently came to camp and volunteered for a day, helping with a variety of projects. Here is a summary of their work: 4 truckloads of logs moved from the forest to Sky-Hi-View, 3 cords of wood splitting at Sky-Hi-View, delivered 1 cord firewood to Solitude Center, 2 hours of pulling noxious weeds, moved and stored boats for winter, stored volleyball net for winter, cleaned exterior cobwebs and windows, cleaned Eagle’s Nest and Sky-Hi-View cabins, helped with laundry and blanket distribution, and baked banana bread.

You’ve Been Spotted!

We spotted Riley Weisenburger (Denver, CO) wearing her RMMC t-shirt. Riley is pictured here in Split, Croatia. Riley has attended summer camp for many years as a resident and wilderness camper. Thanks, Riley, for sharing RMMC with Croatia!
